Parks in this island ... sigh

One fine afternoon in late December, i made a short de-tour to Labrador Park enroute to Queensway (to get my Le Bleus jersey). I was told by a colleague of mine that he found it a reasonable greenery in this small country of ours, after i had shared my experience with him on Kent Ridge Park. Though there are several new eateries to spice up the place, the park is still somewhat lacking. Perhaps there were not many attracting things to see, apart from the WWII heritage. The boardwalk staircase which brings one from top of the cliff to the pier is ok, but the view is miserable. What do one get to see? Ships, cranes and refineries - what else?

But really, i dun think anywhere else could beat West Coast Park - the one near NUS. There is a McDonald's and a playground, so you cun blame the poor facilities. But the view was terrible - you dun get to see the horizon! It is like an enclosed "bay" enclosed by several islands overlapping one another. Not to mention the structures on these islands.
Not to be dispaired, there is still at least a fine oasis in town. Within the Botanic Gardens, there are certain open spaces which you dun get to see any buildings. Kudos to the good pple at NParks and URA for keeping it this way. We can still get to chill out without being constantly reminded that civilisation is just across the street.
So, now you know why i like NZ so much... too bad the flight would take too long.
